Every few years the Athenaeum showcases selected acquisitions to their permanent collection of artwork and artists' books. This exhibition will feature selected works acquired since December 2011 including Lynn Susholtz' All the News You Need.

NEW ARTISTIC VENTURE - Community activist Lynn Susholtz to turn North Park’s Art Produce Gallery into a nonprofit

The way artist Lynn Susholtz sees it, she’s been “nonprofiting” for years. ■ Her North Park enterprise, Art Produce, has partnered with numerous community groups. She’s hosted art exhibits, performances, workshops, community forums, even fundraisers for other organizations in her quest to be a cultural force and an educational resource for the community.

She’s finally decided she might as well officially make Art Produce a nonprofit.

“You know when this really dawned on me? Last May (2014),” she said. “It was a busy month, and we were having our fourth fundraiser for other nonprofit organizations in the garden. And it kind of hit me like a ton of bricks: We should be doing a fundraiser for Art Produce.

“We’ll always support the community, other cultural institutions and individual artists, but at some point, we need to figure out a way to subsidize it that’s not out of our own pockets.”

While Susholtz’s art/design endeavor Stone Paper Scissors will continue as a for-profit business, she’s filed papers with the state for Art Produce to take over the nonprofit status of the inactive Green Scene Gallery, started by North Park architects Zagrodnik + Thomas. She’s assembling a board of directors, writing new bylaws, developing an organizational structure and creating what she hopes will be a model for private/public — or for-profit/nonprofit — cooperation.

“I’ve kind of taken this idea about as far as I can by myself,” she said. “I realize I don’t have the capacity to increase the programming here, and develop and sustain the partnerships by myself anymore. And the funding has to diversify. So I’m very excited about the possibilities.”

Drawings in graphite and colored pencil on velum and rosin paper. Susholtz’ art practice ranges in scale from small drawings that explore the cultural context and social histories of everyday objects to large-scale interactive environments.

Community Development in the Context of Art: North Park and the Citizen Artist

Last spring I was asked by Julie Voelker-Morris, co-editor of CultureWork, to write an article about my involvement as an artist in the redevelopment of North Park. After revisiting many conversations with Leslie Ryan, we co-authored, "Community Development in the Context of Art: North Park and the Citizen Artist". Some abandoned their homes when the men with guns showed up. Some never even had homes of their own; they grew up in tents scattered throughout barren refugee camps. Many left what little they had behind to seek an education and a better future in the United States.

All are now students at Crawford High School’s New Arrival Center, which gives new immigrants a one-year crash course in English language and lessons on American culture before they are placed in standard math, science and history classes with other students their age. And their stories were highlighted during a month-long, autobiographical art show, “Hello, My Name Is,” through March 2 at Bread & Cie, a popular bakery on University Avenue in Hillcrest.

Art Produce and Lynn Susholtz featured in "Food For Thought" in the June 2012 issue of Public Art Review Magazine

This issue explores the theme of Food for Thought and how what we eat affects public art (and vice versa) on a global scale. We'll cover the topic from a holistic lens of the entire food cycle - revealing how public artists address the topics of growing and raising our food within fragile ecosystems, the infrastructure of the global food business, the culture of eating and sharing food within our communities, and ultimately the politics that influence our food system - again, all from the angle of how public artists shape and communicate these processes to their audiences.

What to do with thousands of misprinted paper bags?  MAKE ART!

Students from the New Arrival Center at Monroe Clark Middle School have been working with Lynn Susholtz (Stone Paper Scissors) creating art that tells stories of their travels from their home countries. This spring the students visited Bread & Cie Bakery and Cafe in addition to several galleries, museums, & public art sites. Students created images and text in mixed media on unused recycled bread bags.

Stone Paper Scissors recently installed the entry gates to Kalos, a new North Park rental community developed by Community Housing Works.  The steel and aluminum entry gates were inspired by the olive branch. 

CHW offers residents a multi-purpose community room, after school classroom and computer center, providing both high quality rental homes and services to its residents.

The project was dedicated on May 17, 2013 with honored guests Mayor Bob Filner, City Council President Todd Gloria, and Assembly Majority Leader Toni Atkins.
