Community Construct
A process-oriented work that reveals the hidden creative
potential of collective action
Lynn Susholtz & Anne Mudge
In an installation created for California Center for the Arts Escondido, and later at the New Children's Museum visitors engaged in the process of accretion, contributing small forms to create a collective sculpture with simple materials, straws and pipe cleaners. Another room is an interactive space to build large-scale structures with repurposed cardboard tubes.
This collaborative project utilizes the tetrahedron, a three-sided pyramid made of 4 triangles, also called a Platonic Solid. Combining tetrahedrons with the process of accretion demonstrates structural strength and calls to mind the astonishing architectures built out of natural processes, such as crystals, beehives, and cities.
